I Love NY Logo

Not many logos are as widely known as the "I Love NY logo". When a logo becomes so recognizable such as this one you know the designer has done a wonderful job. This logo was created by a graphic designer named Milton Glaser back in the late 70's for a New York marketing campaign. The logo is just text using a black American Typewriter font with the letter "I" and a red heart in place of the word "Love" on the top line, and NY is used as an abbreviation for the word "New York" placed on the line below. This simple design has been around for about three decades and is a perfect example of great logo design.

Design Principles

To follow basic design principles, a designer must keep in mind color, consistency, form, and clarity. The I Love NY logo used appropriate color, it's easily recognizable and clearly understandable.

The red heart is eye-catching and stands alone from the rest of the black text, drawing the viewer's eye in to the design. Glaser's choice of red is excellent as the color red conveys how passionate some people feel about the state of New York.
