Volcom Logo

The Volcom logo or sometimes referred to as the Volcom Stone logo is a very unique black and white stone logo designed for a skateboard company.

A successful way of making a logo is using just geometric shapes as shown by Volcom's Stone logo. The stone itself kind of looks like an upside down diamond, in my opinion. The left side has a white background with black triangles that make up the interior of the stone to give it shape and depth, and the right side is identical to the left except that it has a black background with white triangles. By using black and white to define certain spots of the stone, the logo was able to achieve a 3-D type of look which almost makes it look like its shining or reflecting, using only 2 basic colors and a completely 2-D illustration.

Design Principles

Standard principles of design were followed.

Choosing the right color is very important as color stimulates senses. It’s also worth mentioning that your colors need to contrast. Contrast helps pieces of a logo fit well with the other pieces.

Their choice in colors, black and white, gives the logo a very bold look which helps convey their statement of “Youth Against Establishment”. Not only do the colors give off a strong feeling, but the contrast of white and black is great for the chiseled look of the stone that the logo portrays.

A proper use of proximity is crucial to have the elements of your logo be pleasing to the eye. The placement of the triangles in the middle of the logo forms their relationship to give the stone depth and character.

Functionality

So what makes the Volcom logo functional? A functional logo has many characteristics such as being able to be scaled to a larger or smaller size for multiple printing purposes. Another trait of a functional logo is having a small color palette.

Giving your logo flexibility by making it functional in terms of printing can save you a lot of headaches in the end. The two color tone of the Volcom Stone logo makes it easy to print. It also makes it easy to vary the shades of black and white or to add different colors to the stone’s color scheme.

The Volcom logo is very unique in the way that it uses its logo combined with text. Most companies make their logo icon the center of attention with their company name. With Volcom Stone, sometimes you may not even notice the stone logo at all, as it often blends in or is placed inside of letters and other very cool icon/text arrangements. A unique logo indeed!
